Combination Foods:

  • Perogies: dough filled with prunes, sauerkraut, or potato/cheese (grain and fruit or grain and vegetable)
  • Holubky: stuffed cabbage (vegetable, meat, grain)
  • Blini with filling: fillings include sour cream and jelly, cottage cheese, caviar, herring, tuna and bleu cheese (grain and meat or grain and milk)

Eat it as a main dish.

1 (4 pound) head of cabbage
1 medium onion
1 teaspoon butter
1-1/2 pounds ground beef
1 cup cooked rice
1 egg
1 cup sauerkraut
15 ounce can low sodium tomato soup
salt and pepper to taste

Parboil head of cabbage, separate leaves, set aside. Brown onion in butter. Brown ground beef, drain and combine with onions. Mix in rice, egg and seasoning. Stuff cabbage leaves with meat mixture, roll-up. Place washed sauerkraut in bottom of roaster and then the cabbage rolls. Pour tomato soup with enough water to cover. Bake at 350 degrees for 2-1/2 hours.

Serves 8 (2 cabbage rolls each)
